This is a change of pace. Luna Is A Bep, known for her raps with heavy local influence, released her new single called 到時, and it is nothing like what we are used to hearing from her. Luna’s previous releases include local modern hip-hop hits such as 麻甩系 and 我唔要再覺得自己廢, and most of them have heavy trap and boom-bap influences. However, for 到時, Luna went back to her early low-fi roots and incorporated it with Cantopop pop rock ballad elements. No doubt this is one of Luna’s more “mainstream” releases, and I think it is a fun and unexpected change of genre for an established artist. This track might hint that Lun’as future releases could be anything, but if they are as unexpected and good sounding as this one, sure why not!
Luna Is A Bep popped up in the local scene with her first single 麻甩系 in 2018, amassing over 600,000 Spotify streams.Throughout her discography, she has low-fi, boom-bap, trap, reggaeton, and some more dreamy songs. However, 到時 stands out, blending low-fi synth-pop with a gradual shift to a pop rock ballad. While Luna has often performed with a band live, 到時 is among the few recordings featuring a full band. This track highlights her ability to fuse different genres, Luna’s willingness to experiment reinforces her reputation as an innovative musician in this ever-evolving industry.
Unlike most of the current songs which are around 2 minutes long, 到時 is 4 minutes and feature a slow build up. Luna crafted engaging dynamics throughout, starting with a quiet intro, verse, and chorus. The synths create a soothing atmosphere and infuse the song with a futuristic vibe. In the second verse, the band joins in, transitioning the track to a Cantopop style before gradually shifting towards rock. Later in the song, the guitar solo arguably marks the song’s climax, adding intensity. But just when it feels like the song is ending, Luna returns to sing the chorus one last time, echoing the song’s beginning. This songwriting style provides a sense of closure, completing the song with a satisfying full-circle feeling. Luna’s thoughtful structure and narrative-like progression make the song feel like a story with engaging highs and lows, and I believe listeners cannot wait for her next release.
