Rob Garratt is an award-winning freelance journalist who has been writing about music professionally for close to two decades. As well as penning scores of think pieces, album and gig reviews, over the years he has interviewed more than 400 professional musicians – including rockstars Noel Gallagher, Carlos Santana, Johnny Marr and Bill Wyman; pop A-listers 50 Cent, Adam Lambert and Tom Jones; superstar DJs Avicii, Mark Ronson, Fatboy Slim and Armin van Buuren; classical heavyweights Plácido Domingo and Lang Lang; and jazz legends Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Quincy Jones.

However none of that compares to the satisfaction he’s gained from writing long-form features about key Hong Kong musicians including Lucid Express, Wellsaid, Olivier Cong and Virgin Vacation. 

Rob is co-founder of the @hkbeatsandeats platform and the Hong Kong music substack Passing Notes, and hosts two nerdy muso pods – Your Brother Should Know and The Jazz Interview Podcast.

Rob has served as a music editor for Time Out, a music feature writer at UAE newspaper The National, and a music critic for the UK’s Press Association, and today writes regularly about improvised music for We Jazz and All About Jazz. He has penned programme notes for arts organisations including the Hong Kong Arts Festival and Hong Kong Philharmonic, groups including Spektral Quartet, and marketing blurb for household brands including Philips and Bang & Olufsen.
