Macanese singer-songwriter Filipe Tou has just released his new song 新浪潮. The title itself offers a nod to the French New Wave film movement of the 1950s, hinting at the rich, artistic influences behind this creation. As the sequel of Filipe’s film-themed series, this song dives into new realms with cyberpunk and post-modern vibes. Such bold musical exploration is a rare find in Hong Kong and Macau’s scenes, making Filipe’s venture both refreshing and exhilarating. When I hit play and watched the music video on YouTube, I was pretty much blown away—it was like stepping into an avant-garde future while having slight hints of the past. Filipe’s work on 新浪潮 is not just a song release, it is also an invitation for film and music enthusiasts to experience music in a newfound way.
Filipe Tou started his career in Macau in 2017 by releasing Pull The Trigger, a track infused with K-pop and hip-hop-influences, this debut helped him make a name in Macau’s music scene. Since then, Filipe has explored a range of genres, from funky pop to cantopop, showcasing his adaptability. Last year, he ventured into nostalgic 90s disco-pop with his release of 高腰喇叭, blending playful songwriting with retro influences. Now, with 新浪潮, Filipe embraces the sound of the 2020s, merging EDM and rock elements. 新浪潮 maintains a steady, energetic momentum, mirroring the continuous evolution of films. The song has a synth and bass-driven sound, complemented by powerful drums, creating a progressive yet light vibe, by not having too many cymbal hits, it avoids the typical heaviness of band-sounding rock. Filipe has successfully crafted a unique synth-rock experience by expanding the possibilities of music production, offering listeners a fresh auditory experience that is both modern and inventive.
The visuals are a vital part of Filipe Tou’s new song, creating a mesmerizing experience by paying homage to different films and important historical moments. The music video alternates between old black-and-white footage and Filipe dressed in modern attire, challenging and mesmerizing viewers with its transitions. I had to watch it several times to fully understand the intricate details and fast-paced scenes, in which the flashy and dynamic style of the video perfectly complements the energetic song. While the music itself is impactful, the visuals add an extra layer of depth by bringing Filipe’s artistic vision to life. This combination showcases what Filipe aimed to portray, which is something innovative and progressive, as well as something modern that is yet nostalgic.
