One Hit Wonder by JUNK!

This track is a fun yet depressing dive into the world of indie artists, and whether you are a musician or not, you definitely do not want to miss out on it! JUNK! Is a project by Glen Lloyd, and according to him, One Hit Wonder is bright, preppy, and has irresistible catchy hooks. Although after listening to it, it is safe to say that they are all true, what truly grabbed my attention, is the heart and soul in the lyrics. JUNK! painted a vivid and realistic picture of the struggles that come with being a musician, especially when you’re hustling to make your way up the ladder. One Hit Wonder is like JUNK! is giving a nod to every indie artist out there, saying, “You’re not alone in this journey”. For those on the outside looking in, it is a peek into the struggles and hopes that fuel musicians, so why don’t we give the song a listen while thinking about how to support our local scene?

Unlike “I Really Wanna Fuck Your Girlfriend”, which is another song from JUNK!’s latest EP, One Hit Wonder is, of course, PG-friendly, but it is also in a different style. The song gives out heavy college and youthful vibes, as if listeners were at a college party, hanging out with their friends, and simply having a fun time. The high-pitched vocals and choppy music at the back make everyone want to dance to it, and I see it being a party favorite in clubs and bars.

Interestingly, despite its upbeat, feel-good sound, the track’s lyrics aren’t all about sunshine and rainbows. Instead, JUNK! cleverly dives into the challenges of being an indie musician. The song paints a picture of an indie musician pouring their heart and soul into their music, yet wondering why fame hasn’t come knocking at their door, and why his numbers are still so low. As an artist, we all know he is not the only person facing this trouble, all our friends, or sometimes even ourselves, might think “Just write one hit and I’ll make it!” When is the hit going to come? No one knows, but because we all find joy in writing and making music, we will somehow find some motivation that keeps us going, I guess that is the quintessential indie spirit. For indie musicians, this track is an anthem, it is like a pat on the shoulder telling them that they are not alone on this adventurous yet daunting path. And if you’re not a musician, don’t worry, because One Hit Wonder has some infectious grooves and upbeat rhythms take make you want to put on your dancing shoes and let loose. Get ready, give this song a listen, dance to it, and cry in joy because the next song you make might just make you become a One Hit Wonder!
