FAD:The Yours、UniXX、ni.ne.mo、tfvsjs,

FAD:李氏力場(阻擋颱風,沒有假期…)、雷宇揚(i.e. 「香港鬼王」)、Carina River(因訪問時成員之一的Carina去了海南島度假…)

Summer Serenade

More Than A FAD
1) The music journey began when…
FAD: We all started in secondary school; through MTV, Channel V and radios we got to know different kinds of music like J-rock, Britpop – Radiohead, Suede, Travis, Oasis and all those other bands. Eventually we met a bunch of people with whom we shared similar music interests, and that’s how we started being in bands.

2) Favourite band from Hong Kong and band you most want to work with or share the stage with?

FAD: The Yours, UniXXX, ni.ne.mo, tfvsjs – we’re all really good friends, actually.

3) Most unforgettable performance to date…

FAD: Our CD Release, 19th April this year, because we were the ones who put absolutely everything together, from booking the venues to lighting and sound – it was like we were making a baby together. That day we also performed a lot of songs we haven’t done live in a while, and songs that meant a lot to us, so in a way they marked the little milestones in our journey. We also invited a lot of our friends, and it almost felt like a wedding [laughs]. Even TVB came!

4) On performing: outdoors or indoors, big settings or cozy shows?

FAD: They have their own advantages and disadvantages – we like them both. Outdoor shows have a better ambience to them, while indoor shows aren’t restricted by weather conditions, but if the sound isn’t all that great, it’ll really affect the performance. You can have a bigger crowd with big shows and that helps with getting you in the mindset for really enjoying the feeling of being onstage, but smaller shows really highlight the intimate interactions with the audience.

5) FAD’s long term and short term goals?

FAD: For now, we’re focused on doing well for all of our shows in August and taking part in a Taiwanese project called “Around the World in 80 Seconds”. It’s initiated by a Taiwanese, Huang Yu-Shiang, who’s visually impaired – he has invited musicians from all over to play and perform his 80 second tune using their own interpretation. They’ll all be put together into one final ensemble-song in the end, and the idea behind this is to gather hope for others who are visually impaired. (For more details, refer to https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BzbXNSmlWzz_M0ZUZWRVbXFodGc/edit)

The long term goals are to write more new songs, find out where we’re going musically and put out our second EP!

6) The theme of “Summer Serenade” is, well, summer, so what are some must-haves for you in summer?

FAD: Li’s field (which many HongKongers regard as a force field to repel typhoons away from the city so that there’ll be no holidays and business will go on as usual; Li is a wealthy tycoon); Simon Lui (an actor famous for his ghost stories; summer is also ghost festival in lunar calendar); Carina River (at the time of the interview FAD member Carina is on holiday at Sanya).

7) Any recommendations for how to get through the summer heat?

FAD: Get a cat! Because they get rid of rats (‘rat’ and ‘summer heat’ share the same pronunciation in Cantonese)!

3b.JPG

8) You have two MVs, one’s the ‘Sofia’, and the other is “Dream in Dreams” – why did you choose these two songs to be the MVs? Any interesting experiences to share during the filming process?

FAD: “Sofia” is a song we all really liked and even when we were writing it a lot of images popped up in our heads, so naturally we wanted to do a MV. “Dream in Dream” came out of a chance encounter with the Swedish director Dan, who really liked our music and reached out to us and invited us to shoot with him. He was behind both the concept and the style, and he put in a lot of work into the post-production process for such a great MV to come about.

When we were shooting Sofia, it was only 10 degree Celsius; we were all wearing down coats and had scarves on, but our vocalist Sky had to be in a tank and boxers all day!

9) You all have pretty interesting stage names (e.g. Sky Donkey, Sammy Circle…) – how do they came about?

FAD: They were all just random and for laughs! [laughs]

3c.JPG

10) Where do you see yourself in ten years’ time?

FAD: How many ten years does a person have in their lives? (Catchphrase of Wayne Lai’s character Chai Kau in popular TVB drama Rosy Business)

FAD will be performing at Summer Serenade on 9th August 2014 at Backstage.
