A 5 member outfit whose music is “built on a heavy rock foundation” and infused with different elements, Aphonia played a set which, while heavy enough, I would not categorise as death metal, somehow lacking the aggressiveness expected of the genre. However, the band’s infusion of different elements into its music is notable as each of song sound different enough as not to get typecasted into a single genre by purists.
Musically the band was competent with some nice guitar riffs, there are some areas which I feel require a little attention, firstly, the bass drum double-kicking could be tidied up a little, with notable inconsistencies. However this does not detract from the overall performance and would probably be only noticed by drummers and technical reviewers like me. Another area where attention is needed, is the vocalist – while his supported voice is OK, he is a little inconsistent in his unsupported range in the lower register. Other areas which would improve with more experience, is the band’s stage presence. A relatively new band, the band appears to lack confidence to the level of projecting a certain level of uncertainty. The band needs to project itself more, own the stage and audience.
Over all a competent band, I have no doubt that it has the potential of becoming a stalwart in the metal scene in due course.
