Our fourth event as part of our 21st Year Anniversary Series! Thanks so much to Sky Burial who wanted to come and play at The Underground and helped us to curate such a great metal line-up! It was fantastic to be back at Wave Music. Thanks to Addy for his support of Underground; he made all three bands sound fantastic. Thanks to Ken for assisting Addy with the sound. Big shout out to Aurelius who worked the lights like a pro! Thank you to the three bands who performed and shared their songs with an engaged and mostly-moshing audience. Thank you to everyone who turned up. Special thanks to Aaron Michelson for the photos and Hazel-Rah for the reviews. A big thanks to Raven, our wonderful doorperson. Lastly, thank you to Cadence & Aaron, who both spent hours creating the incredible show poster.

Aphonia

Don’t let me fade away (by wage war) (Cover song)

A 5 member outfit whose music is “built on a heavy rock foundation” and infused with different elements, Aphonia played a set which, while heavy enough, I would not categorise as death metal, somehow lacking the aggressiveness expected of the genre. However, the band’s infusion of different elements into its music is notable as each of song sound different enough as not to get typecasted into a single genre by purists.

Musically the band was competent with some nice guitar riffs, there are some areas which I feel require a little attention, firstly, the bass drum double-kicking could be tidied up a little, with notable inconsistencies. However this does not detract from the overall performance and would probably be only noticed by drummers and technical reviewers like me. Another area where attention is needed, is the vocalist – while his supported voice is OK, he is a little inconsistent in his unsupported range in the lower register. Other areas which would improve with more experience, is the band’s stage presence. A relatively new band, the band appears to lack confidence to the level of projecting a certain level of uncertainty. The band needs to project itself more, own the stage and audience.

Over all a competent band, I have no doubt that it has the potential of becoming a stalwart in the metal scene in due course.

White Pink

1. 上唐八
2. 30
3. 低人一等
4. 關你撚事
5. 漫無目的地
6. 原地踏步?

An 8 member whose “bio” is basically an advert for interior decoration, I had no idea what to expect before their set started. The band comprised 2 vocalists, a DJ, a noise artist, 2 guitarists, bassist and drummer.

The music was almost entirely of rap, set against metal accompaniment, with extensive use of pre-recorded tracks and the noise artist providing additional effects, with all the “growling” vocal being pre-recorded. Most of the songs were about their personal experience and aspirations, which make them quite relatable to the audience. Considering the size of the stage and the number of band members, it was a miracle that they could all fit on the stage, but that they managed quite well (even though the bass player was mostly hidden throughout the set) and the 2 vocalist made very good use of the stage, being quite active and bouncy and managed very successfully engage the audience. I wonder how the full band would do on a bigger stage. One thing that particularly caught my attention was that despite the band’s extensive use of pre-recorded tracks, the drummer did not require the use of clicks, which I thought was pretty impressive.

An enjoyable set, tightly delivered, but again, not “death metal”.

Sky Burial

1. The Smouldering One
2. Vacant Throne
3. Eternal Submission
4. Inside the Abyss
5. Burned to ashes
6. Persephone

Now comes Sky Burial, arguably the only true death metal band of the evening. A 4 member founded in 2017 (vocalist, 2 guitarist, drummer and… no bass player), and describing itself as a slam/death core band, the band lives up to its description with room to spare in a 50 minutes set.

Despite not having a bass player, the band delivered a full sound and rich rhythm, with the vocalist growling her way through the entire set. For some reasons the break between their first 2 songs were quite long and embarrassingly silence, at the end of the second song, the band and front-of-house decided there was a mic problem, and after swapping out the mic, everything went smoothly. The band delivered a really tight set, despite their songs having many tempo changes – I particularly want to compliment the drummer, who, in my opinion, was very competent. The band did not speak much between songs, which is not necessarily a bad thing, and their music “spoke for itself” and managed to whip the audience into a frenzy.

Aficionados of death metal, I daresay, would really enjoy this band – it delivers what it promises with good stage presence.
