Based in the vibrant cityscape of Hong Kong, Togolese singer-songwriter General Lino recently released his latest single, “Why Would I.” This provoking track invites listeners to explore the essence of what truly holds value in our lives. While General Lino is known for his breezy, reggaeton-infused tracks like “Good Morning” and “You will be Criticized,” this piece strikes a different chord.
“Why Would I” draws inspiration from Western ballads while subtly nodding to the nostalgic vibes of 80s Hong Kong pop. This unique blend is a testament to General Lino’s multicultural artistry, having backgrounds of being fluent in French, Ewe, and English, blending it into a harmonious soundscape, from his base in Hong Kong. The song offers an intriguing familiarity, leaving local listeners with the sensation of encountering something both reminiscent and refreshingly. The slow music with guitar playing in the background struck me with a feeling, and reminded me of something like Hong Kong classic “友情歲月” and the lyrics reminded me of Earth Song by Michael Jackson, a global classic that talks about the world and humanity. It is an interesting blend that is a new-classic in Hong Kong’s music scene, it is a breath of fresh air for us while not having to leave our comfort zone.
Enhancing the auditory experience is a music video shot across diverse Hong Kong landscapes. From scenic natural settings to the bustling city, and contrasting wealthy neighborhoods, it artfully captures the spectrum of lifestyles. ” One of the many memorable scenes of the video would definitely be General Lino sitting next to a “維修” (to be fixed) sign in the nature, as he sings with heartfelt simplicity, “Peace is the key, love is the key, joy is the key, happiness is the key, that’s all I need.” It’s a powerful moment that really hits home with its message about keeping things simple and focusing on what truly matters. Being a local Hong Kong citizen, this shot was so powerful and it instantly made me think about if all those things that I’ve been chasing and searching for was worth it, or if a simple, joyous lifestyle is actually what I have always wanted.
“Why Would I” is one of those songs that really hits you, especially in Hong Kong, where everyone’s always chasing something and trying to be like someone else. Take a minute, slow down, give the song a listen, and ask yourself, “Is this really what we want?”
