Our eleventh event as part of our 22nd Year Anniversary Series!
We were so happy that we could gather three legendary Hong Kong bands to perform all on one night.

Encore: French Connection
There is a reason this is called the Underground Legends, and Erik Piece and his band are about to show us why.
Erik Piece led the band on vocals and guitar, joined by Veo on guitar, Keath on bass, JT on saxophone, and Marvin on drums.
“Mysterious Eyes” opened and from the first few bars, Erik established himself as a storyteller, using his vocals to pull the room into the song’s world. It was impossible not to reflect on just how good these musicians were.
“Great Escape” opened with Keath’s bass, whose line acted as a recurring riff throughout the song. The chorus was instantly memorable. I found myself singing along despite hearing the song for the first time.
JT introduced the riff for “There Is No Wonder,” laying a light, melodic line over Erik and Veo’s guitar work. At this point, Veo’s subtle contributions became increasingly clear. He moved in and out of Erik’s guitar lines and JT’s saxophone phrases with a light, precise touch. Nothing felt excessive. Every note served the song.
Then Erik’s vocals moved to the front. He poured himself into the performance, turning a song I didn’t know into one that already felt familiar. That was the moment when the name Underground Legends really made sense.
Erik told the audience that he would not talk too much, but he still took a moment to engage with the room. He noticed some of his students in attendance and teased them lightly for being there. He then thanked the audience and introduced the musicians one by one, calling the entire band legendary players. He referenced the many bands and projects connected to the players, including Hard Candy, Kissing on the Dance Floor, In Love and Pain! and more.
When Veo was introduced, the recognition in the room was immediate — a clear sign of the respect he commands as a guitarist and band leader in Hong Kong. The introductions made clear what this show had brought together: musicians with decades of experience, individual histories and the kind of chemistry that cannot be manufactured.
Before the final song, Erik spoke about people leaving Hong Kong to pursue different paths and how much he missed them. He gave a special mention to Jabin Law, one of his favourite musicians, encouraging the audience to check out his work.
Erik also spoke about getting back up when life knocks you down. He dedicated “Morning Star” to Glen Hansard, whom Erik described as a beautiful soul and a major influence on musicians far beyond Ireland.
Erik thanked everyone for coming, but the audience was not ready to let the night end. Calls for an encore filled the room. Chris B jumped on stage, mentioning that Erik’s last Underground gig had also featured ChoChukmo 觸執毛 and Blaster, and that there was time for an encore.
It was a small but meaningful reminder of the strength of Hong Kong’s underground music community — a scene built on shared history, collaboration and an openness that welcomes everyone.
The encore was “French Connection,” a song about temptation, addiction, and staying out all night when you know you should not. The band looked at one another, Erik agreed on the structure, and what began as a light jam soon became the best track of the night. The band may not have planned to save the best for last, but that is exactly what happened.
If you get the chance to see any of these musicians perform, go. If you get the chance to see Erik Piece with this ensemble, it is an absolute must.

Destiny
A progressive punk band with a lot of performances, the earliest one being in 2014. With Steve as the vocalist and guitarist, Maggie as the bassist and Ah Wah with the drums. This was my first time seeing them perform and they showed great dedication to their craft.
They really had a strong punk vibe coming from their performance and I was really impressed with how fast Steve’s vocals were, I wish that the pace of the automated customer service speakers were half as fast as his…
I want to talk about some of their songs in particular..
“Why?” was their first song. I got surprised with the pace straight from the start and it got my heart pumping.
“Monkey See Monkey Do” a change of pace from the first one, with considerably slower instrumentals and vocals even sounding a bit scary at times.
If I had to guess I would say that “Never Trust a Scientist” was the quickest and one of the most intense song. It felt like a rogue agent of the Umbrella corporation was blowing the whistle and didn’t have much time. They even have a music video for this song on their YouTube channel.
“Call to War” was a hopeful yet pessimistic song, although if war ever called me I don’t think I will be picking it up with hope anytime soon. “Little Man” is a good intense song to listen to if you miss your mommy.
“大懒堂 (LMF cover)” was their second last song and it was a cover that Steve seemed to be really proud of singing, it is related to the origin of the band and a tribute to their friend that had a part in forming the band.
All in all, Say Mosquito is a great band and I would definitely recommend them if you want a big taste of punk, their performance was great and you could see the hard work they do. I would recommend checking out their website.

My big mistake
A pop rock not alt rock band with their 8th performance with the Undergroundhk with one decade of performance with JKY as the vocalist and guitarist, Man Ping being the second guitarist, Andy Cheung who is the bassist and Kelvin Ngan as the drummer.
Their performance had a great variety in it, I got Cantopop vibes from their second half of the performance, rock vibes too and for me at least even some grunge vibes from some of their songs.
Onto the songs..
“Let Go”, JKY’s vocals were great with this one and the instrumentals blend in well with his vocals. I can see why they are considered legends.
“Don’t Believe” was the song that I would say had a more grunge-y vibe to it in the beginning. It was one of the more intense songs relatively.
In the second half of their performance, there was a keyboard involved and the venue had a more peaceful vibe to it especially when compared to the 2nd performance of the night. Now I don’t know if this is accurate but the songs gave off a very similar vibe to the Cantonese songs that my local friends introduced me to.
I would like to talk about their last song of the performance in particular which is “My Big Mistake” which was the most emotional song. JKY was into the song as much as the audience were. It was a tranquil and relaxing song to end the night on.
Andy is Typing… was a great band to end the night on, I wish I could see more of their past performances over the last decade to see their growth with music. I wish them more fruitful decades to come.
